How long is a vacuum supposed to last?

Depends on the vacuum and how it's used. I've had cheap ones that blew out in a year and weren't worth fixing, and I now have a good one that lasted 30 years before a motor needed replacing($150), and another good one that has lasted 12 years so far with no service needed. Sounds like yours needs a new belt.
