I need to wash my carpet....what do you recommend?

I need to wash my carpet, it is full of dog pee and heavy traffic areas. I was thinking of renting a RugDoctor from Lowe's. Do you think its a good idea to rent one or should I buy one instead? Which vacuum do you recommend?
